Why to wait for spring to start doing gardening when you can conjure up a few things in February to kick a head start on healthy growth of plants when the springs turns up!!

David Hobson was not at all wrong for saying “I grow plants for many reasons: to please my eye or to please my soul, to challenge the elements or to challenge my patience, for novelty or for nostalgia, but mostly for the joy in seeing them grow.”

It is very natural that this urge to grow plants gets amplified as soon as the spring arrives and you start dreaming of lush green gardens .  But we have seen our customers complaining and lamenting over the fact that their plants don’t grow properly, primarily because of poor strategies like choosing the right plants, making good companionships, and looking for soil needs of those plants.  So here are a few things you can do before the spring season starts:

1- Map your garden:

An easy way to plan your garden is to map it out and divide it into square feet. Depending on the vegetable, you can plant a certain amount of seeds per square foot.

When mapping out your garden you should also consider companion planting. Companion planting is the practice of planting vegetables or flowers that complement each other and produce higher yields and quality when planted in closer proximity. For almost any garden vegetable, marigolds are a good companion plant because they deter pests like beetles. Plan on including marigolds in your garden layout!

2- Clear the Drainages:

Now is the time to ensure the leaves and debris gathered in drainages is clear and the spring rains will have adequate  run off. spring seedlings do best in soil which drains well.

If water drains from the hole in 10 minutes or less, you have fast drainage. If the water takes an hour or more to drain , you have poorly drained soil. Improve soil drainage by building raised beds or by adding organic matter to existing soil in the form of well-rotted manure, compost, or peat moss.

3- Order the seeds:

When you’re done with the mapping out your garden, planning what to grow, and clearing the drainages, it’s time to order the seeds. Make sure to collect your stock before time and start seedlings inside.

Many seedlings will fare better and will have more time to produce a full crop if started indoors first. February is the perfect time to start seedlings indoors so they will be strong enough to harden off and plant outside once its warm enough.
